Ryan Gosling: Why Peter Jackson Fired Me From 'Lovely Bones'

12/03/2010,  The Hollywood Reporter

Ryan Gosling spoke candidly with The Hollywood Reporter about his 60 pound weight gain for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones, the film the director fired him from just days before production began.

"I was melting Haagen Dazs and drinking it when I was thirsty," Gosling told us during our annual awards season roundtable discussion.

Gosling explained that his much-ballyhooed weight gain was all a part of how he saw the character of Jack Salmon, the role ultimately filled by Mark Wahlberg.

"We had a different idea of how the character should look," Gosling said. "I really believed he should be 210 pounds."

Jackson apparently disagreed, but the Oscar-nominated actor doesn't hold a grudge.

"We didn't talk very much during the preproduction process, which was the problem," he said. "It was a huge movie, and there's so many things to deal with, and he couldn't deal with the actors individually. I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong."

"Then I was fat and unemployed."
