It seems inevitable that every 3 years a new kid comes along and rocks the teen world. In the days when I was growing up, the star-making machinery was being stoked on a weekly basis. Magazines like "Teen Beat" and "Tiger Beat" raced with images of pretty boys and girls as fast as you could turn a page. But, "one day you're in, and the next....you're out!" doesn't only apply to fashion. The post- Beatles era of pop fanaticism in the 70's and 80's, with the likes of David Cassidy, The Monkees, and the Brady Bunch, created a new wave of young stars who were thrust into a world of rigorous schedules, mall appearances, photo sessions and eventually endangered childhoods.
Today, respected management and PR firms are more protective of their stars and not willing to ruin their careers and over-exploit them, while more and more parents are getting involved in this process. Logan Lerman, the 18-year old star of the teen book series, "Percy Jackson & The Olympians," is just about to hit that 'tipping point, where Greek mythology and teen martyrdom clash. Everyone wants a piece of the action. And the screaming fans show up everywhere making life a different game for Logan.
Is Logan prepared for what's just about to happen? Is it really going to happen? I think so, and these are my reasons:
Reason #1
The real chemistry and brilliant marketing is that young audiences will be wowed by Logan's Greek God abilities on - camera, and like anyone who tackles evil, will end up being the hero of the day off-camera. Being the good guy, the hero in your first Blockbuster - Good Move.
Reason #2
The Harry Potter machine is just about to slow down, but eventually something has to eventually take its place, Why not Percy? While comparisons are inevitable...the small team of kids, the quest, the 'bring me the rod,' the wizardry, the mythology. It's all there. But hey, that doesn't sound like Harry Potter to me, it goes way back, further back to the 'The Wizard of Oz," which set the precedent for all modern movie-making. Sorry Harry, but you can thank L. Frank Baum for that. So let's lay off Harry and give Percy Jackson his due props... Logan Lerman is his own guy.
Reason #3
Logan's a Great actor. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the pretty face doesn't hurt. But one day he'll start shaving and doing plays on Broadway and everyone will be like...'boy he's a good actor!' Well yea, he's actually a great actor right now. He's worked opposite great stars like Mel Gibson, Michael C. Hall, Russell Crow, Christian Bale, Helen Hunt. He's got the chops to have a long career.
Reason #4
Careful planning, good marketing, great management, great film studio. When you've got good people behind you, you can achieve anything.
Reason #5
The kid is cool. He's humble, grounded, and genuinely nice. Reason enough.
Hang on to your pen Logan, this adventure's going to be a long one, and signing autographs will put as much of a cramp in your hand, than "Riptide" ever will.
